Are you being forced to buy this because it is it new "it" thing? While the ideas are good the author seems to think that the charter school model is the best for all cases and all students. If your class is not super high paced with your students always on edge like west point then it won't be the thing for you. As an ESL teacher in NYC we have to take things slower and in a very different way. Just saying the title should be, Try some of these things as they can help you become a better teacher but not all of these things are perfect or best suited for all teacher or students.Product details

Teach Like a Champion 49 Techniques that Put Students on the Path to College (Audible Audio Edition) Doug Lemov Grover Gardner LLC Gildan Media Books Reviews
This book is amazing. So many teacher books are founded in theory, but this one is founded in practice. As a second year teacher, I took one tip from the book at a time and worked until I could implement it without focusing on it before moving to the next tip. I loved the explanatory videos. Seriously, this is a do-it-yourself PD for teachers in districts with no, limited, or poor professional development opportunities. THE best book on teaching I've read!
I bought this book after attending a meeting on teaching tips for seasoned teachers. It was a very wise purchase. It contains tips on how to engage students who opt out with the "I don't know" line, how to see to it that every student "gets" the correct answer, how to always achieve the desired classroom behavior -- without lecturing, etc.
I'm still reading this book but have employed the tips that I've already discovered. They are easy to use and work very well. My English/language arts classes, which have always been orderly and productive (our school is off the charts in this subject on standardized testing), is now even better -- to the degree that I've received numerous compliments from my superiors.
This book is an INVESTMENT in the lives of students, not simply a purchase.
BOTTOM LINE Buy it! You will be glad you did.
I enjoyed this book and am excited to implement many of the 49 techniques in my classroom (some of them won't, I don't think, work for my inner city 11th graders, a point made in other reviews). Just based on the 49 techniques, I might have given the book four stars, since I think a bit of discussion of age-levels might have been useful (the DVD is almost all, or all, middle and elementary school).
But almost half the book presents material beyond the 49 techniques, including very useful discussions of lesson pacing and teaching reading. The latter section was like an entirely other book, and was among the most interesting discussions I've read on the topic (and since I'm a high school English teacher just finishing up the Johns Hopkins teaching Masters, I've read a fair bit on it).
Two of the insights that I need to discuss with my school and investigate further, and which have HUGE potential ramifications
1) He advocates homogeneous grouping (by ability) for maximum student achievement (I wish he'd said more about this and provided references). If he's right, he could make a huge positive impact by pushing this harder; my school does the opposite, as do many schools, and I've thought it's a big problem, but there's not much willingness to challenge it; the science is, I thought, against my instincts...
2) He spends quite a bit of time dissing the standard method of teaching reading that uses comprehension strategies. He is especially disdainful of "visualization," but isn't kind to any of them other than summarizing. He's convincing, but again I'd have appreciated citations. My school is using Strategies That Work, and while his arguments make serious intuitive sense, I would have enjoyed a bit more reference to studies and/or elaboration on his points.
Overall, this book will improve my teaching significantly, and will thus have a positive impact on the lives of the few hundred kids I'll teach this year. It must feel good to be Doug Lemov.
This book has some awesome strategies for teachers. This is a NEW teacher MUST. Buy it as a gift for college graduation, or give it to a friend or colleague! They will thank you forever! Buy it for yourself--you deserve it! Inside you will find teaching strategies that will help you hold your student accountable. No more accepting "I don't know" as an answer. Very positive approaches to dealing with behavior issues/ preventing behavior issues. Tips for using every minute of instruction, and many many more great ideas. The text comes with a CD that has video clips of people implementing the strategies. Anyone can take these easy to use suggestions and tweak them to fit their teaching style. Best book I have read as a teacher to increase my repertoire of "positive" strategies for guiding my students in their education. I love it so much that when I misplaced my copy, I purchased another one! (Now I have two and will gift one to a friend!)
This book was recommended to me by a couple of my colleagues and I must say, I am so glad I read it! Straight forward and easy to read. It not only lists techniques to use in your classroom, but gives the methodology behind it and the reasons why you would use them. This book was written by someone who spent lots of time in the classrooms of highly effective teachers who get results. Holding students accountable is a very important component in my classroom and this book has tons of ways to not only hold them accountable for their learning, but to actually CARE about their learning and take responsibility for it. There are so many methods detailed in this book that you cannot possibly take it all in at once. My advice is to refer to this book over and over, taking one or two methods from it each time, use it on your students, and incorporate each one into your "bag of tricks" until they become habitual. I have found that every single technique in this book is extremely effective in getting the desired results you are seeking from your students. Every teacher should own this book and use it!
