An Eldritch Ambassador began the regeneration of a dragon, a regeneration that nearly ended in the harem of a Chatcaavan worldlord. Rescued before he could die, the Emperor now faces the nearly impossible challenge of assailing an empire intent on conquest while reconciling the life he lived before with the person he's becoming.
He can't do it alone.
Sediryl's impending capture by pirates inspired her to a daring gamble, one that landed her in the confidences of their megalomaniacal leader. That this has placed her perfectly to pass intelligence to her allies is a stroke of luck, one that ties her to the very heart of the Empire and the fragile link that holds them all together.
That link is dying.
Neither the Chatcaavan Empire nor the Alliance will recover from the titanic clash toward which they are accelerating... and the only thing standing between them is a frail network of rebels and spies, of allied Eldritch and Pelted and Chatcaava. But can such different people hold together against such impossible odds? And can they pay the cost to stop an unwinnable war, when the price is so incredibly high?

In Extremis Princes' Game Book 5 eBook MCA Hogarth
If I could give it and the other 4 a ten, I would. I've never said that about a book or a series before. Multiple themes on the the rape of choice, the power of redemption, what we are willing to sacrifice for a greater purpose, love in many forms, endurance past pain, the obsession with violence, the complicated way love entwines in our lives, change, prophecy.. I stayed up night after night to read each of them, sometimes going back to re-read parts of them for something I might have missed. It's a graphic book, one of 5 out and another to complete it, and some parts are hard to read. So, not for the faint of heart. But I cried. The language is lush and rolls on relentlessly with the characters mental dialogues embedded with the action, without being purple prose or analytical jargon, and without being boring although written almost moment to moment -- viscerally descriptive while evading crudeness. But the sex is mostly described by feelings and sudden sensation, random, casual violence, mental abuse, and implied as well as real horror of abuse, rather than too many details. I'd read her 3 book series (Earthrise was #1) and loved it -- but it was nowhere near as overwhelming as this one. If you like fantasy sci fi with a heaping dose of stay-up-all-night-to-finish it, this Princes Game series is it. Guess I'll have to wait for the last book in the 6-book arc -- grrrr.... And no, I do not know this author and I bought all these books.Product details

In Extremis Princes' Game Book 5 eBook MCA Hogarth Reviews
I know people who look at the dates of reviews and go "ah paid reviews" or "they're having their friends stack them". I know because I do that myself.
This is not one of those. The reviews are all hitting because the book just came out and we're all just finishing it now. I stayed up late and got up early to read this. It's worth every second of lost sleep.
In Extremis is book 5 of what is mostly likely a 6 book set. DO NOT START here! You will be lost and confused. Go grab Even the Wingless and start there.
For those that know what is going on OH. MY. GOD. You cannot put this down. It picks up running from the end of 4 and doesn't stop.
The continuing thread of redemption and growth continues. Only this time, instead of just staying with people, Hogarth is trying to redeem entire empires. How do you redeem an empire? With a single small act that leads to more and larger ones. Be aware, you cannot redeem people, ideas or empires without pain and sacrifice. The toll on the characters is high. It's not too easy on the reader either, but the story is well worth the cost.
This is the fifth book of the Princes' Game series. The series begins with Even the Wingless. Like the others in the series, it is a dark, complex, intimate work.
It works best and is at its strongest on a personal level, in the portrayal of individual interactions between members of different factions enemies, allies, assets, lovers, friends, all intersecting and clashing. The backdrop for these well-developed individuals and their complex interactions is the clash of interstellar empires. The scale of these empires is mindbogglingly vast hundreds of systems, trillions of people. The setting has become better-developed as the series progresses, but for me it remains thin. A few dozen characters can't be the stand-ins for trillions in my mind I am left feeling like "where is everybody else?"
I'm not the target market for galactic empire sf, is what I'm saying.
That said, I enjoyed In Extremis for the depiction of complex relationships of various sorts. There are several different threads in an effort to capture the manuevering of empires. My favorite was the Emperor's thread, which is about his struggle to reconcile the monster he used to be with the person he is now, and the person he wants to become. And the fact that "I have had a change of heart and I regret my crimes and will do better in the future" doesn't erase past wrongs or turn victims into friends. People are allowed space for their own reactions to him.
The story moves at a slow, deliberate pace with a lot of tension and torment, a lot of characters in bad positions who are lying in wait for the opportunity to bring their plans to fruition, to improve their situation or that of their allies'. Some of these situations are partly resolved, but it's a cliffhanger ending, waiting for book 6 to let the readers know the rest.
I will be there when it comes.
I find myself in an odd position. This is, from an objective standpoint, far and away the best volume of the Princes' Game series thus far. It's tightly plotted, the various POVs have equal weight, there are genuinely shocking plot twists, no too-neat solutions, and the stakes feel weighty and real.
But I love this series the most when it looks upon standard novel conventions and says 'oh, how cute.' I loved the almost claustrophobic intensity of Even the Wingless. I loved the absolutely insane amount of space Amulet Rampant devoted to Lisinthir and Jahir's relationship. The things that no other author would dare try and yet Hogarth's pulls of flawlessly, that's what I love. Many authors can write a fantastic book, but few authors can write something that is genuinely unique.
So I suppose my complaint here is that In Extremis is very good, but lacks the risks of the previous books. Even Some Things Transcend and Only the Open, which didn't entirely work for me, at least took those risks still. But it seems so silly to complain that a book is too objectively good, you know?
And this book really is very good. The Emperor's character arc is sublime. I felt uneasy about his character before now, mostly that his past crimes hadn't been given enough weight, but that is addressed here fully. Jahir's story arc was awful, but never anything less than compelling. And Lisinthir... Was sorely lacking. Maybe this was my real problem all along?
I greatly look forward to seeing how the story wraps up in the final volume, and I am already anticipating the mother of all book hangovers.
